Great Horned Owl
Why a Great Horned Owl?
I love wood burning wildlife. So for my latest Pyrography I wanted to create the amazing Great Horned Owl.
I am blessed to have one of these magnificent creatures residing in the woods around my home. I have had the opportunity to catch quick glimpses this owl from time to time.
His mighty wings are so large, but extremely silent which always takes my breathe away.
These owls have specialized "fringes" in their feathers that break up air turbulence, allowing them to fly in near-total silence. Their prey never hears them approaching.
Great Horned Owls eyes are huge and fixed in their sockets (which is why they turn their heads up to 270 degrees). If humans had eyes proportionate to an owl’s, ours would be the size of oranges.
Because owls can see in the dark and have an incredible range of motion with their necks, they are often used as a metaphor for God’s all-seeing nature. They represent the idea that nothing is hidden, even in the "darkness" of human life. Spiritually, this correlates to the gift of discernment—the ability to see past illusions and perceive the "true" heart of a matter.
I found an incredible photograph taken by Piper Ashton on the website Pexels. I loved owls expression and wanted to re-create the image with her blessing.
Owls are always so fun too wood burn. In real life they blend right in with the bark, so naturally I always try to burn them on a piece with a live edge like this one.
Sometimes we can forget how many amazing creatures surround us at all times, especially when we forget to look for them.
Thanks for taking a look! If this guy is still available for sale you can find him over in my shop.
